Sports Taping: Patella Tendon BJJ Pain

Our Brazillian Jui Jitsu practitioner,  Chancey,  has a cranky, right knee. His main complaint is experiencing localized pain, right below the kneecap when squatting, lunging and and going for takedowns — anything that involved a loaded knee, extending and flexing.

When we tested Chancey’s right knee for strength, we got an immediate pain response, and his right quadricep was signficatntly weaker versus his left.

Watch us sports tape Chancey’s patella tendon and the fabulous results here

A few things about our “patella tendon” sports taping:

  • Always “strength” or “movement” test the knee joint for the most efficient and effective sports taping.
  • I always preach, “Less (tension) is more when it comes to sports taping”, so don’t overstretch the tape. However, I do like to apply a bit more tension when sports taping a tendon or ligament. This is my own personal preference, and have had good results in my experience as far as decreasing joint pain and increasing muscle strength performance.
  • Try one strip first. Multiple criss-cross sports taping strips (as you will see in follow-up vidoes) are not always necessary.
  • Retest the knee joint after each sports tape strip is applied.

Remember not to go taping haphazardly. Get a solid sports taping education foundation and keep a simple supply checklist
