PEEING AT NIGHT AND FRACTURES: What's the Link?

At night, are you awake and coordinated when you go to the bathroom to pee? Darkness, half asleep, furniture, rugs, thresholds, dogs —  plus the urgency to urinate?  Not a great combination. It’s a miracle we don’t have more accidents. Now imagine being elderly, already being vision and balance compromised. There is a strong correlation between elderly falls and nighttime urination and fractures.
Here are a few TIPS to keep you safe when having to tingle at night:

  • Clear your thresholds.
  • Remove slippery rugs or tape down the edges.
  • Have nightlights on or flashlights nearby, or install automatic sensor bulbs.
  • Wear glasses? Put them on. Contacts? Keep a backup pair of glasses nearby, if possible.
